A day in the life of a stay-at-home mom

Hello there. I am a full-time mom (FTM), also called a stay-at-home-mom (SAHM). My life isn’t exactly exciting, but it is…mysterious.

Okay, it’s not exactly mysterious, but I know a lot of people out there want to know what I do all day. I get asked his question often. SOOOO, since I’m such a good sport, I decided to document a day.

I wanted to do this a while back, but I kept second-guessing my choice of day as “not normal enough.” The truth is, my days vary wildly. I will try to get another one of these posts up this week to get a more well-rounded picture of what it is I “do exactly.”

4:15 a.m.

I wake up to the sound of crickets chirping and Josh saying “Your alarm is going off!”I get out of bed and pour myself a bowl of cereal. I talk to Josh and start my teakettle.

ImageI did not take these photos at 4:30 in the morning, of course, because it is very dark then. 🙂

I love this Teavana infuser! It is the best!!

4:30 a.m.

Josh is off to work. I grab my cup of tea and my Bible study homework and head to our bedroom, where I sit on the bed working on the homework and watching the baby monitor.

5:00 a.m.

Jacob is up. I get him out of his crib and change his diaper. I try to talk him into some breakfast items. We play, and then I remember my half-consumed cup of tea. I lead him back to the bedroom where I sit on the bed, checking my email on the iPad and sipping my tea. While I do this, Jacob makes a mess. I clean up his mess.

6:00 a.m.

Jacob and I take our show on the road. Not far down the road. We go into his bedroom because my big chore of the day is cleaning out his closet. I take everything out from the floor area, stack it into piles, and then go through all of the hanging clothes. When I’m done with that, his entire room is covered in stuff.

7:15 a.m.

Jacob is getting sleepy. We head into my bedroom and he goes down for a nap around 7:30.

7:45 a.m.

I sneak away from the sleeping angel and down the hall. I refill my kettle and start water for some more tea. While it’s boiling, I take out ingredients to make bread for tomorrow, refill my flour jar, and make my tea. I sneak back into my room to quietly get dressed, then back out to the kitchen. My grandma calls, and I talk to her.

8:10 a.m.

I resume my Bible study work.

Image

9:00 a.m.

Jacob wakes up crying. This usually means he’s still tired, so I lay down with him and try to get him back to sleep. He falls asleep, but every time I try to move away, he wakes up again. This irritates me, so eventually I just get up. 🙂

9:30 a.m.

I put Jacob in his high chair and make him some oatmeal. I also cut up an apple, and then peel a tangerine and give him some beet chips. While he eats, I pick up the kitchen. I lace up my sneakers, put on some sunscreen, and grab my sunglasses. When he’s done, I change his diaper and clothes.

Image9:50 a.m.

We are out the door for a walk. Jacob runs away from me as I try to get him into the stroller. I chase him, he runs, I pick him up, he gets mad. We get Koal on the leash and start walking.

10:30 a.m.

We come in from our walk. I grab my purse and…

10:35 a.m.

We are in the car, on our way to Sprouts.

We meet my grandma there, and do our shopping. Jacob is only interested in treats. He loves his “fruit snacks” (dried cranberries). He smiles and waves at all the shoppers, and I get a lot of compliments.

ImageImage

11:40

We have lunch with my grandma at Rubio’s. Jacob is distracted and would rather walk around saying “hi” to every person there.

12:30 p.m.

We head to Target for a plastic crate to pack away the clothes he has grown out of.

1:10 p.m.

We are home from Target and Jacob is going down for a nap. I lay with him. When I sneak away, I start loading his clothes into the bin. I am almost done when…

2:00 p.m.

Jacob wakes up. I march him into his room to help me finish packing up and cleaning.

3:00 p.m.

Josh comes home.

3:30 p.m.

I load Jacob into the stroller and we go rollerblading.

4:00 p.m.

We come in from rollerblading and I pick up the kitchen and start cookie dough. Jacob plays with his water table (and the house) in the backyard.ImageImageImage

4:30 p.m.

Dinner time. Josh and I have leftovers plus sourdough bread and a salad. Red lentil curry soup for me, steak and (homemade) mac and cheese for him. This is a salad with apples, goat cheese, cranberries and raisins, orzo, and balsamic vinaigrette. Jacob eats a variety of things, like cheese cubes, orzo, cranberries, brown rice cakes, raisins, apple slices, banana slices, beet chips, watermelon, and anything else I find that I think he will eat!.

ImageImage

5:30 p.m.

Dinner cleaned up, we load Jacob in the bike trailer. We ride to Jeff and Linda’s house to say hello. While there, I change Jacob into his pajamas.

7:30 p.m.

Bedtime for Jacob! Once he’s asleep, Josh and I enjoy some freshly-baked cookies and watch Game of Thrones.

8:45 p.m.

Bedtime for Josh! I head to the computer to upload pictures from Vision Quest.

So that’s my day!

Whew. I’m exhausted.

I stopped handing him goldfish while I took this picture (that’s why he’s mad).

Vision Quest

Today is Vision Quest, the biggest race event in Josh’s year. He has been training so hard for this moment.

You may have heard of the race in Leadville, CO because of the celebrity involvement and documentaries that have been made, but Vision Quest is both under the radar and really, really intense. 55+ miles and over 11,000 feet of climbing make it like nothing else out there. {Here is the official website.} Riders will have to make it to the top of three separate peaks spanning basically the distance of the Trabuco/Silverado/Black Star canyons–and they ride to the bottom in between each peak! The race ends in Holy Jim canyon (in the news this week due to the dramatic rescue of two missing teenage hikers after 4 and 5 days in the elements). If you watched news coverage of the search and rescue efforts you have gotten a glimpse of the terrain. Riders are amateurs like Josh through professional mountain biking legends.

Please think positive thoughts for him. Prayers are certainly welcome for his safety and general ease in finishing (no mechanicals this year!)

Read my post on his second VQ experience here.

A post on last year’s VQ (Josh had a mechanical and did not finish–heartbreaking) and life in general with a new baby here.

A video that shows pretty well what it looks like to ride this race (taken on a go pro camera) here. It does look amazing to see the sun come up!

Josh has put a LOT of hours, miles, thought, and planning into preparing for this event, so it is a very big deal. I am both nervous and excited, just hoping all goes well! The race starts at 5:30 am PST.

Jacob and I will be cheering him on!

Crazy Walking Baby

Jacob does the cutest things, and I need to take more video, but for now, here is a combination of a couple of film snippets of my crazy baby.

Easter 2013

We started the day with eggs and basin cooked by Josh. Jacob napped, found his basket, searched for eggs, and we went on a family bike ride. Then we went to my parents’ house for more egg finding, family, food and fun.
Jacob loved searching for eggs and actually put them in his basket! Some he re-hid. The easter bunny filled them with animal crackers since babies do not need candy, and daddy showed him that throwing them at the ground opened the eggs so that he could eat the crackers (maybe not the best lesson, daddy). Hehe.

We had dessert with the Penprase family to find out that Ashley is engaged! My little Smashley. I can’t believe it. What a wonderful day.
