Sophie’s Leash

Jacob is in a throwing/dropping phase. Playing with him involves picking up whatever toy he dropped on the floor over and over again. He thinks it is very funny to take what you hand him and throw it somewhere where you have to chase it. My friend Lisa may have put it best when she said that Cassidy, her daughter, is teaching her to “play fetch.”

For us in particular, with our love of babywearing, it is especially treacherous to give Jacob a toy while we are out and about. I like to give him a toy, like Sophie the giraffe, to keep him occupied while I am running errands. But, if he drops it, I run the risk of Sophie falling on the dirty floor of whatever store I am in or even getting lost. Sophie getting lost would be a catastrophe!

I was thinking about it, and I thought of an idea. What if the toy that my little Jacob was playing with was attached to him or somewhere where it could not fall on the dirty floors.

So I decided to make a leash for Sophie. The first prototype used metal snaps, and for the second I decided that the plastic baby snaps are much cuter. 🙂

How they work is fairly simple: one end of the leash would snap around Jacob’s wrist, the side of the stroller or car seat, or any other surface that can hold it (like a belt loop or plastic chain, for example).

What do you think? Would you buy one of my leashes for any of your friends who have babies?

I am thinking of selling simple ribbon loops on her one of my wraps so that when I wear Jacob the toy is within reach.
Here are some action shots!

Up in the mountains

I am currently up in Big Bear with Jacob! Josh will join us tomorrow and I am glad because we really miss him. I thought I’d post a few pictures. It’s gorgeous up here. It’s been warm (mid-80s) and clear. We have hiked, talked, and eaten some great meals. Each day we are joined by more friends. I just came inside from a bonfire and a delicious s’more. 🙂

When I am back on a full keyboard I’ll have to post about our transition to a woven wrap from the Moby and our jest back carries! He’s a little low in these pictures, but it was only my second time and I had to wrap on the go in a parking lot. 🙂

We have stayed in this cabin every summer for years. It’s nice to have Riley’s best friend Collin back — it hasn’t been the same without him during his two tours in the Middle East with the Marines. I am feeling very content and blessed. Have a great weekend!

The new Friday night

Allow me to set the scene: it’s Friday evening. Josh and I are going to go out to dinner, a commonplace event for us. I am dressed and make-up-“ed” and we are going to leave soon.

Except we are playing with a six-month-old baby.

While waiting for Linda to arrive to watch him while we go out (a warm meal! Conversation!) I hand Jacob to Josh so that I can get Jacob’s dinner ready (oatmeal yum). They are laying together on the office floor, Jacob OB Josh’s chest.

“Korey!” Josh yells.
“Is something wrong?”
“Jake is making a face I’ve never seen. You’d better come check him out!”
“Can you describe the face?”
“Well he is puckering his lips and smacking them while staring off into space” Josh says as I approach.

I take one look at the face and I know what it is.

“I’m pretty sure he’s pooping.” I say.
“ON ME?!” he tells. “ARE YOU KIDDING?! Get him off me!”
“Well it’s not like he pooped on you. You should take it as a compliment!”
Huh.

So if you think it’s a glamorous life, ours with this child, think again!

6 month checkup

Jacob had his 6 month checkup last week. (he was 6.5 months old)

This was an important one, as his first year is half over!

Here are his stats:
length:27 inches, 60th percentile, grown 6 inches since birth.
weight:16 lb. 11.9 oz., 30th percentile, gained 8.97 lb.

He is meeting and exceeding all developmental milestones. His big goal was to double his weight in the first 6 months, and he clearly has. Thanks to the magical powers of breastmilk, I don’t need to worry about his weight as long as he is gaining. The fact that he’s a bit under average is probably just due to a growth spurt. It’s impossible for a breastfed baby to be overweight, which is great as obesity in infancy pretty much guarantees it in later life. He is such a great eater that I think I’ll be more flexible with how much I feed him if he seems hungry and let him lead his solids process.

Good news, all, and the best news: his next appointment is at 9 months and he doesn’t need shots! Woohoo!

Extreme diaper changing

As Jacob gets more mobile, it’s increasingly difficult to change his diaper. I captured this photo during a particularly extreme diaper changing adventure.

20120706-011524.jpg
As you can see, he’s rolled over and started to fidget toward the wall. While I was taking this, he grabbed several items from the back of the changing table and promptly dropped them between the table and the wall.
