More metal stamping projects

20140226-075128.jpg

So this (above) was my first attempt at making a hammered metal tag. I think it’s really pretty, but I’m not sure the letters show up very well on it? Also, it takes FOREVER. haha. Next time I think I’ll hammer a silver blank and use it as the bottom of a layered stack…but then the top will have a message and the bottom won’t? I’m not sure what to do with that. Maybe I should experiment with hammering the edges only or something.

It was also my first time using the baby feet stamp. I really like it!

This was my first project, but I just swapped out the bottom blank with this one that says “pray” yesterday. I don’t love this heart stamp. You really have to whack it like a thousand times to get an impression, and even when you get one, it’s not great. I’m kind of bummed.20140226-075146.jpg

As you can see, my “child of God” message was part of the learning process, as parts of the letters are almost too faint to read. Thankfully, I think it goes with the overall distressed look of the metal and doesn’t bother me.20140226-075152.jpgI made this little gem for my wonderful friend who is expecting (I won’t say her name in case anyone reads this that she knows!) I am going to drop it off before this post goes public! 🙂

Beach day

A big storm is rolling in to SoCal, so I decided Jacob and I should pack up and head out to the beach before it arrives. Really that’s just a convenient excuse because it’s been consistently nice for months. 🙂
Tuesdays in Laguna are pretty mellow, so off we went. We snagged a parking spot easily, but since when is it $2.25 an hour?!? Your quarter doesn’t get you far. And the meters take credit cards…that’s when you know you are in trouble. Anyway, we went to Heisler beach, just because it’s pretty and the rocks make great tide pools. We saw a lot of sea anemones, some tiny fish, a crab, and a lot of barnacles and mussels.

Jacob and Charlotte

Jacob just loves my cousin Charlotte! He talks about her being pretty all the time. Seriously. Out of nowhere he says “Charlotte is pretty!”
Yep, it’s adorable.

Nutritious Bone Broth

If I told you that one inexpensive food item could improve digestion, help your hair and nails grow faster and stronger, reduce inflammation and joint pain, boost your immune system, re-mineralize your teeth, improve your allergies and strengthen your brain tissue, would you buy it? Probably if it were a pill, but it’s not. If I told you that our great-grandparents probably had this almost every day, would you be surprised? It’s broth. Real soup stock, made from boiling bones and vegetables.

I know it sounds kind of gross, because you’ll be boiling bones or a whole chicken carcass, but once you can get over the “ick” factor, it’s pretty amazing. You are probably already buying chicken and beef broth or stock at the store, and most of them are loaded with sodium. The best part is that it is really easy and really inexpensive.

Read this article to find out more about bone broth and how it is made. I made mine with beef bones that I bought at Sprouts. They were already frozen from when the butchers there had prepared other parts of the animal. They are labeled as “soup bones” and usually are leg bones: femur or hip area. They aren’t gross. I roasted them in the oven as suggested in the article, and then let them sit for half an hour with real apple cider vinegar and water to make the nutrients more absorbable. Then I turned the crock pot on and added water, carrots, onions, and a handful of herbs from my garden (sage, rosemary, oregano, lavender). I wanted to add parsley, because it sounded good, but the author said something about adding it in the last 30 minutes, and I forgot. :/ In any case, I cooked it in the crock pot for 48 hours (on high for the first day, then low because that seemed like too much heat). It is deeply brown, shimmery and fragrant. The flavor is INTENSE. I used it to make a taco soup tonight and it was delicious. Next I plan on roasting a whole chicken and making chicken stock.

My crock pot is a large one (Hamilton Beach Stay and Go) and this batch of 2.5 lb. bones, one onion, and water to the top made enough broth to fill one whole large mason jar (pictured), another large jar 3/4 full, and about 4 cups into tonight’s soup. I froze one jar and have the other in the fridge for meals this week.

Metal Stamping

I love it! It’s easy, and yet hard…wait. That doesn’t make sense.

Okay, so there aren’t any special skills required, but maybe patience, and I’m not the best with that. 🙂

So let’s talk about how it’s done and what you need.

IMG_0879

Metal Stamping Basics

Letter stamps: I found this to be difficult. You can buy uppercase, very plain letter stamps at JoAnn’s and Michael’s, but I wanted lowercase. I don’t know…I just like lower. Probably because I’m a child of the internet age and to me, capitals are YELLING AT YOU! I found my current, “handwriting-style” set at Hobby Lobby. (Have I mentioned I’m in love with Hobby Lobby?!)

IMG_0881

A hammer: I use one of Josh’s. Any hammer will do.

Steel block: Yes, you need steel. I tried a block of wood and it bends the blanks too much.

Metal blanks: These are easy to find at JoAnn’s, Michael’s, and Hobby Lobby. HL has my current favorite blank, the heart you’ll see below.

Jump rings: also at craft stores and online.

Chains: I haven’t found really great chains in any store, so I ordered some cheap ball chains on etsy. I’m sure there is a place that people go to buy them and I just don’t know what it is. I don’t want anything that will turn green (so it has to be stainless – my skin is really sensitive) or fall apart.

A sharpie: to color the letters in

Rubbing alcohol: to remove the excess sharpie

Blue painter’s tape/masking tape: they sell special tape for metal stamping, but I can’t imagine that would be necessary. Use what you have. You’ll want it to hold the blank in place while hammering.

Small pliers: I bought a cheapo combo pack at Michael’s and it serves me just fine (plus I had a 40% off coupon).

My recommendation for all of these supplies is to slowly buy them with weekly coupons at your local craft stores. HL will have a metal stamping block, nice letters, and a lot of blanks. The other two will do for uppercase letters, some blanks, and jump rings and the like.

Optional: Charms, like the ones I found at HL, really make the necklaces cute.

Here you can see that I used my uppercase stamps for a monogram and date for new baby Colton.

How to stamp:

Tape your blank to the metal block. If I am writing more than one line of text, I will usually line some tape up on the block as a guide. Of course, the fun and beauty of metal stamping is in its imperfection, so don’t worry too much about lining things up. I’ve found that it’s nearly impossible to do anyway. Each letter is centered on the stamp, and you can’t see where it is as you’re holding it, so eyeball it and hope for the best. You will make mistakes. One thing I do to make sure I have the letter facing the right direction is have a stack of used blue tape on hand, a couple of layers thick, to test stamp. I can quickly see if the letter is facing the right way by looking at the imprint it left in the tape layers. If you stamp on shiny metal surfaces, you can sort of see the stamp’s reflection in the metal to line the letters up.

I find that I need to hit the letters quite a few times to get a good imprint. This means you have to grip them very hard! If they shift, you’ll get a doubled-up imprint that makes you feel dizzy. Letters that have small appendages, like the lowercase “a” or “d” need some tilting toward the appendage to ensure it gets stamped, otherwise it’s too hard to read. The letters “i” and “j” seem to stamp very deeply for me, so I need to be careful with those two. I think as I get to know the stamps I will get better and better.

Here was my Valentine’s Day gift to Josh:

Spongebob socks

Jacob has some Spongebob socks and he loves them. Yesterday he wanted me to know I needed to take them off for a bath because they were stinky. He pulled them off and I got out the camera…

stinky socks!

I have much to say about the metal stamping, but for now a picture of the keychain I made josh for Valentine’s Day. I like it: simple, masculine. What do you think?
